£9 million Invested into Cancer Innovation Technologies
A small number of projects that work on improving cancer detection have received £9 million worth of investment from SBRI Healthcare, the NHS Cancer Programme, and Accelerated Access Collaborative.
These projects back the NHS Long Term Plan with the hope that by 2028, 75% of an additional 55,000 survivors will receive early diagnosis, meaning they go on to live for up to five years after diagnosis.
There were more than 50 submissions for the competition with the top selected technologies demonstrating clinical effectiveness. These chosen few will be taken to market regionally or throughout the UK to prove their potential.
The goal of the competition is to speed up the process of getting these breakthrough technologies to the market. The next one will be held in springtime this year.
Chief Executive Officer of Qure.Ai Technologies, Prashant Warier, described how “Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in the United Kingdom. Its aggressive nature and absence of early, visible signs often leads to diagnostic and treatment delays. The five-year survival rates remain low at 14%, with 30% of patients dying within 90 days after diagnosis. The use of AI technologies can help in early detection of potentially cancerous nodules from chest X-rays. It can also help in incidental finding of nodules earlier for asymptomatic patients and faster diagnosis through same-day CT scans.”
