Waterproof Biosensor Improves Identification of TBI
A waterproof biosensor trialed by Ohio State University can identify biomarkers linked to traumatic brain injuries. The device proved its capabilities when put int a mock cerebrospinal fluid, where it still managed to reliably find changes in potassium and sodium ion levels, which are critical in TBI.
Developers behind the creation of the biosensor claim it has an “unprecedented combination of features” which mean the product is able to identify changes and relay the information to scientists almost immediately.
It has been reported that the chip used has similar properties to that of a human hair- particularly regarding its width and pliability. It is these properties that make it ideal for use in the brain.
According to Jinghua Li, a member of Ohio State’s Chronic Brain Injury (CBI) Program, subsequent brain injury may happen following a TBI. This can be diagnosed by identifying abnormalities in the quantity of sodium and potassium ion in cerebrospinal fluid.
Jinghua Li, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Ohio State, stated that they “have a long way to go from our tests in the lab, but these findings were very encouraging.”
