Olympus Strikes $3.1B Deal with Bain for Microscope Unit
Olympus’ microscope unit Evident stands as a lucrative enterprise, contrasting the life cycle of the digital camera which suffered as smartphones took over the market segment. In its last report, the product boasted over 119 billion yen in sales, with 17.5 billion yen in operating profit.
Although sales are looking great, Olympus is set in the belief that selling Evident would be in the best interest of both its medical division and the microscope business. Therefore, the firm has decided to sell the unit for $3.1 billion to Bain Capital, an investment management company.
Evident contains a collection machinery that doesn’t align with Olympus’ new focus shift to healthcare; this includes X-ray analysers, industrial microscopes, biological microscopes, and more.
Chief Executive Officer Yasuo Takeuchi, aspires to dominate the medical endoscopes segment. This mission prompted the company to sell its digital camera division which no longer turns a healthy profit and sell Evident to Bain Capital.
