Drinking Recycled Sewage Water Could Solve Water Stress

Chief Executive Officer of the Environment Agency, Sir James David Bevan KCMG explained: “rivers and reservoirs are exceptionally low, and millions are subjected to a hosepipe ban”, which can easily be observed across many regions in the UK which have been established as in a state of ‘drought’ by the Environment Agency.

Although it’s not looking great for Britain, Europe is in an increasingly perilous position. The Rhine River in Germany is impassable for ships, and tankers are carrying water to France ‘where the taps have run dry’.

Sir James David Bevan cautioned: “When we turn on the tap, what comes out started in a river, lake or aquifer. The more we take, the more we drain those sources”. The answer sounds relatively simple on paper yet is not a proposition that will likely be popular with the public- to recycle sewage water and treat it to be safe for drinking.

Without significant and implemented changes, the Department of International Trade has predicted that in less than 30 years, the amount of water needed in England and Wales will increase from 16.6 billion to 24.8 billion litres daily.

In dry areas of the world including select regions in the United States, as well as Australia and South Africa, water treatment alternatives have grown in popularity. In the UK, wastewater is regularly recycled for new use, but it is unknown as to whether a “toilet-to-tap” approach be accepted.
