James Webb Telescope Identifies Potential for Life in Space

CO2 has been identified in the atmosphere of a planet from a different solar system by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Peter Gao, one of the authors of the research, expressed that “it’s incontrovertible. It’s there. It’s definitely there. There have been hints of carbon dioxide in previous observations, but never confirmed to such an extent.”

The planet is known as WASP-39b, with its width exceeding that of Jupiter and paralleling Saturn in size. It is extremely hot, circling its star once for every four days on Earth, therefore it is an unlikely source of alien life.

Prior studies of the planet had identified atmospheric articles absorbing solar radiation however it was on a very small scale. Therefore, the evidence remained insufficient to persuade astronomers that carbon dioxide actually existed.

Nicolas Cowan, a third-party astronomer, claimed he “would not have bet more than a beer, at most a six pack, on that weird tentative hint of carbon dioxide from Spitzer”.

CO2 may be present in atmospheres across the galaxy, we just haven’t been using a telescope as powerful as JWST which is required to detect it. Natalia Batalha, who led the team, commented that “carbon dioxide is one of the few molecules that is present in the atmospheres of all solar system planets that have atmospheres. It’s your front-line molecule.”

In the future, scientists want to utilise JWST to detect a range of particles in the atmospheres of tiny rocky planets. There is a strong and exciting potential for certain planets to be suitable sites for life since they are just far enough from their star to contain liquid water.
