Legislation in to Integrate International Dentists

6th September 2022

In order to make the process of foreign nurses and dentists working in the UK a more seamless process, the UK government plans to announce new laws.
Steve Barclay, the UK health secretary, aims to move towards an active increase in hiring from abroad in response to the present labour shortage in those industries. In theory this should allow a huge amount of healthcare workers to find employment in the UK and simplify the registration process for people who earned their medical degrees overseas.

If implemented, it will open doors for dentists and nurses from a range of countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, and India.

The initiative has been praised and accepted by the BDA, however it was noted that this will not solve the NHS dentist labour crisis.

Chair of the BDA, Eddie Crouch, explained the move was “long overdue. Ministers need to do more than try to fill a leaky bucket. They need to actually fix it.”

However, some outlined the potential drawbacks to having such dependence on foreign workers. Patricia Marquis of The Royal College of Nursing claimed this “isn’t the only solution. Our health system is already over-reliant on international nursing staff and we must ensure recruitment is ethical and not being done in countries that are facing workforce shortages more severe than our own.”
