BMS’ Psoriasis Treatment Sotyktu Set to Make $4M by 2030

12th September 2022

Otezla is the medication currently used to treat psoriasis, however when Bristol Myers Squibb bought Celgene $74 million three years ago, it chose to pursue the development of dermatology and immunology medicine deucravacitinib.

This option, marketed under the brand name Sotyktu, is set to be a huge success story, having now been cleared by the FDA for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.
Before the end of September, BMS hopes to make Sotyktu available to patients, anticipating the ability to generate $4 billion or more in revenue by 2030.

BMS’ Chief Medical Officer, Samit Hirawat, exclaimed that “there is no doubt in our minds that this is the right drug.”

It was revealed during research that participants using Sotyktu had skin clearance that was statistically and clinically significant compared to placebo and Otezla. The medication sparked minimal safety concerns and had side effects that were significantly varied to those seen when using Otezla. With 3.8% discontinuation rate in the placebo patients and more than 5% in the Otezla patients, less than 2.5% of participants stopped taking Sotyktu on the back of severe reactions.

About 2 million of the 7.5 million people in the U.S. who are affected by psoriasis have moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis; almost one quarter (2 million) experience moderate/ severe symptoms.

Typically, patients begin therapy with topical medications while the condition is at a less severe stage, moving onto therapies that tackle the whole body when the condition worsens. Although Otezla from Amgen is currently the preferred option, doctors are seeking other choices.

Sotuktu is the “first and only selective TYK2 inhibitor in clinical trials across multiple immune-mediated diseases”.
