Innovative AI Unlocks Potential to Reads Minds

On the back of a new study it has been revealed that AI can decipher words and phrases from brain activity, even if it’s capacity to do so remains limited. The AI presents 10 options based on what an individual has just listened to using a few seconds of brain activity information. It so far has a success rate of about 75%.

This technology has unlocked the potential to allow thousands of disabled people to communicate, even those in “vegetative states” and next to no consciousness.

Currently available communication aids involve dangerous brain procedures where electrodes are installed. According to neurologist Jean-Rémi King, this novel technology “could provide a viable path to help patients with communication deficits … without the use of invasive methods”.

A third-party computer scientist, Giovanni Di Liberto, commented that “performance was above what many people thought was possible at this stage”.

He continued to explain that magnetoencephalography (MEG) calls for a large, pricey equipment. The trick will be in finding ways to reduce both cost and complexity before it can be used in clinics.

According to linguist Jonathan Brennan, it’s critical to comprehend what “decoding” actually entails in this context- being defined in the study as speech produced from brain activity. However the AI has significant limitations in practicality considering it was could only provide correct results when it was given a limited number of potential predictions.

Scientists will need to figure out how to decode what individuals are trying to communicate for it to be a useful communication device.
