M&S Makes Moves on Animal Welfare

In an effort to lead the market in animal welfare standards, M&S is launching “Oakham Gold” and switching to Hubbard chickens in accordance with the Better Chicken Commitment.
One of the requirements for these chickens is a multigrain diet to promote gradual growth and muscular development.

Because they are raised over a longer period of time, they are stronger and more adaptable, especially to higher levels of heat.

In order to help the birds foster responses they would have in the wild they will have an improved habitat with 20% more room, a higher quantity of places to roost, and more pecking aids available.

Technical Director of M&S food, Andrew Clappen, expanded on the change: “When it comes to chicken, we want to keep raising the bar to improve welfare – it’s something we know our customers care deeply about and we do too.

CEO of RSPCA Assured, Mike Baker, articulated the move as the “biggest positive change to chicken farming in a generation. It’s a landmark achievement for animal welfare, which we hope will set a leading example for other retailers.”
