CDS Update Coined Aspirational and Unachievable
Welsh Health Circular: The Function of the Community Dental Service (CDS) and Services for Vulnerable People was just released by the Welsh Government.
It outlines the Community Dental Service duties that Local Health Boards must uphold.
The majority of CDS surgeries lack the manpower necessary to provide their own services and manage wait lists, therefore these initiatives will require more funding and a larger team of people to implement them. However, these two concepts are not predicted to be seen anytime soon.
The department has been having trouble keeping up with the backlog of high-risk individuals needing assistance throughout Wales. budgets. The CDS needs to update several surgeries which require new apparatus and technology systems, however, the local health boards who supplies the financing must take it from already established budgets.
This problem has opened up the possibility of the CDS becoming a paid service. “In some Health Boards it may even be appropriate to replace an entire NHS independent GDS practice with a salaried model in situations for example when a contract has been handed back.”
These propositions are ambitious at best, with no tangible suggestions considering the fund and staff shortages. The Wales Committee for Community Dentistry will discuss this at its upcoming meeting with the Chief Dental Officer.
