Dentists Desperate As Funding Fails

Dental practices are in desperate need of funding after the termination of the multiplier pandemic support. In order to address this, contract holders should expect a short period of “bridging” financing which has been put in place in exchange of the multiplier imbursement and the GDPA (General Dental Practice Allowance) legacy enhancement payment.

According to the Scottish Administration, there will be a wage increase of 4.5% and an increased overage agreement from the start of next month. Presently, Retail Price Index stands at over 12%, therefore the agreed level of funding provided won’t be enough for clinics to pay for all necessary procedures.

Denture repairs cost around £26.40 in lab fees, but funding via the Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR) only covers £24.24 and is anticipated to drop to £22.22 in December. This puts dentists in a compromising position as they can’t possibly do procedures making a loss, leaving them worried about their capacity to uphold treatment guidelines.

The Cabinet Secretary mentioned in his letter that an open book exercise may result in a more effective support system to address costs. This suggestion would mean that officials use expense documents held in dental clinics to assess how much funding they need to cover the prices of procedures, which hopefully will be a significantly more productive and precise way to measure evidence.
