Omnipod DASH Battery Poses Risk to Users

Insulet has stated that Omnipod DASH customers have been experiencing battery issues with their Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) devices. Problems ranged from battery bloating, liquid seeping out, and in a few instances, the devices would get excessively hotter than they should.

The business assured consumers that they will provide upgraded products to everyone that already owns the current model in the next few months.

While it has been revealed that every one of Insulet’s Omnipod DASH PDMs have problems pertaining to the battery, the risk may be higher if it is more than 18 months old. The chances of problems occurring is escalated when the product is at full battery and kept on the charger throughout the night.

Although there has been risk, no one has claimed to have experienced an injury as a result of the battery having problems.

Users should check their PDMs regularly for a protruding rear cover, rapidly draining charge, overheating, or generating a smell.

In the case of any of the above being identified, the device should be discarded in favour of an alternative secondary insulin regimen. Insulet can provide patients with a short term substitution device upon request.

In their figures for the second quarter, the company’s management specifically outlined greater warranty expenses related to the Omnipod DASH PDMs.
J.P. Morgan Analyst Robbie Marcus said that, “given the clarity on the root cause of the issues, management expects a software fix that limits charging beyond a certain threshold to address the problem”.

He noted that the majority of the $35 million to $45 million expenditures associated with exchanging and updating the PDMs are anticipated to have an impact on third-quarter cost of sales and fourth-quarter operating expenses.
