MP Graham Stuart Discusses Local Dental Crisis
MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, stated that he was increasingly worried by how long it took individuals to secure a dental appointment in those regions, and that he intended to reduce them.
An representative for the NHS stated that changes to dentistry publicised in 2022 should make a significant difference to the problem, enhancing patient access.
A Conservative councillor for South East Holderness, Lyn Healing, explained that she “recently phoned round every local practice and I was shocked to be told that local residents may have to wait two years to see a dentist.”
She continued to say that “going private was not an option for most people” within her area, so places like Withernsea should receive priority.
The increasing anxieties follow the discovery that the East Riding of Yorkshire is one of 20 ‘dental deserts’ according to research by the Association of Dental Groups (ADG). These areas had just 32 dentists covering 100,000 residents, as a result of this the ADG demanded an immediate improvement in appointment availability.
Mr Stuart said he had discussed these problems, specifically in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with Ms. Wilson, chief of dental commissioning for the NHS in Yorkshire.
Mr Stuart said that “with the impacts of coronavirus still being felt in the industry there are challenges, but I am going to continue working with my colleagues in the NHS to get the waiting lists down and open up more capacity for my constituents.”
A representative for NHS commented that “discussions around further changes that benefit patients and staff were ongoing.”
