Galway Set to be Dexcom’s New Manufacturing Location

9th May 2023

The venture is expected to generate as many as 1,000 high-skilled employment opportunities throughout a five-year period and is backed by IDA Ireland, which works to drive export enterprises in the country. It will cost approximately €300 million to complete.

Irish Politician Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said this will generate great things for Galway and the surrounding areas, with “up to 1,000 high tech graduate and technician positions expected in the coming years.” Furthermore, “it will bring many spin-off opportunities, jobs and contracts for other businesses in the region.”

Enterprise Trade & Employment minister, Simon Coveney, explained that this is “a huge vote of confidence in Ireland’s significant and growing talent pool and the world-class MedTech cluster that has developed in the West.”

Assuming the project’s planning permission request is signed off, the Dexcom unit will be the company’s first production facility in Europe, enhancing its current capacities in Malaysia and the United States.

The manufacturing process at Athenry will be streamlined and mechanized, with a focus on sustainable technology. Millions of Dexcom CGM sensors will be able to be manufactured here annually.

Dexcom’s EVP of international operations, Barry Regan, expressed that they are “pursuing an ambitious growth strategy that requires increased manufacturing capacity to support our rapidly expanding European user base.”
