FDA Approves Bimeda’s SpectoGard® Sterile Solution

28th July 2023

The FDA approved Bimeda’s SpectoGard Sterile Solution back in September, with the company delighted to report it is now accessible to veterinarians and cattle farmers across the US.

This is the only therapeutically equivalent, generic spectinomycin sulphate injection currently on the market that is authorised to manage bovine respiratory illness in cattle.

A similar product by Zoetis, Adspec®, was previously authorised for this use back in 1998- this had an identical active component to SpectoGard Sterile Solution and was administered in a comparable quantity and dose form. However, Zoetis’ injection has not been produced for the last 5+ years.

Technical Services Lead at Bimeda, Dr. Chris Thomsen, said explained that they “are excited to provide veterinarians and producers an effective treatment option for the most common bacterial causes of BRD from a class of antimicrobials that hasn’t been used in many years. SpectoGard Sterile Solution doesn’t have the same potential side effects as the aminoglycosides do.”

Cattle should receive their SpectoGard Sterile Solution injection once a day for three to five days in a row. It comes in 500 mL vials and needs a prescription from a veterinarian.
