Hertfordshire Life Science Complex Signed Off

The proposal for a £900 million Hertfordshire-based complex comprised of 15 facilities dedicated to life sciences has been authorised.

The Elevate Quarter project, according to its creators UBS Asset Management and Reef Group, will be “one of Europe’s largest life science campuses” and potentially generate almost 5,000 employment opportunities.

The proposed complex, which would be situated next to Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst and pharmaceutical industry lead GlaxoSmithKline’s international R&D centre, was accepted by the planning and development board of Stevenage Borough Council.

This comes after the conversion of The Forum retail complex, which received permission to be transformed into a production plant in February of this year.

One of Reef Group’s CEO’s, Piers Slater, explained how “Stevenage is ideally positioned to attract world-class talent and the campus will facilitate further collaboration between major multinationals and biotechs.” The design enables “life science businesses to scale-up over time and create an open and accessible environment for both employees and the wider public.”

CEO of Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, Dr Sally Ann Forsyth, said that “this is a landmark day for Stevenage and UK science, strengthening our position on the global stage for technological and scientific excellence.”

The initial building stages are anticipated to begin towards the end of 2023 and be entirely finished before the start of 2026.
