Pioneering Surgical Device by Moon Surgical Implemented in US Surgery

9th October 2023

The Maestro system from Moon Surgical has been implemented for the first time by doctors in the US to assist in weight reduction operations.

Maestro is a device that can help with conventional laparoscopic surgeries and was given US FDA authorization in December last year.

The device was employed in Florida to assist with sleeve gastrectomies, the most popular weight loss procedure. The number of physicians needed during the operation decreases when using this because of the robotic arms’ ability to handle and adjust equipment.

Baptist Health’s head of colon and rectal surgery, Dr Ron Landmann, explained how “Maestro provides the control and dependability needed in minimally invasive surgery at a time when staffing shortages introduce workflow challenges and variability.”

An improved version of the technology got CE certification, according to Moon Surgical. With the inclusion of technologies like cloud connectivity and surgeon-supported hands-free scope control, the company has managed to enhance scalability and polish the look.

Moon Surgical’s CEO, Anne Osdoit, explained that “After treating fifty patients in our first-in-human clinical trial, we are excited to be doing clinical cases in the US.”
