Pfizer Announces Mass Employee Cut at Kent Facility
Ella Jackson
Pfizer has announced that their pharmaceutical sciences small molecule sector, based in Sandwich, will be closing. This facility handles production of new therapeutics for medical trials and accounts for over 900 jobs.
The closure follows a new money-saving scheme after a plummet in coronavirus injection profits. While some employees are being relocated to the US and India, just 500 scientists and admin workers will have to find jobs elsewhere.
On Tuesday, Pfizer alerted their employees of the closure and meetings to discuss the next steps for PSSM staff have been put in place. In early 2024, employees are set to be given a notice period.
The news came as a surprise to employees who had initially been prepared for a small reduction in workers instead of a mass facility cut.
A Speaker on behalf of Pfizer commented, “Various areas of Pfizer’s global enterprise are making changes to operate more efficiently and effectively,”.
