A wireless broadband acousto-mechanical sensing (BAMS) device for ongoing analysis was revealed by investigators in the ‘Nature Medicine’ journal.

In children under the age of 5 and newborns under 4 weeks, heart and digestive tract issues are responsible for a substantial number of fatalities.

At present, hospitals use sensor devices and cables attached to computer displays for ongoing monitoring. This process aids medical judgement but could be greatly improved by the introduction of BAMS – a wearable wireless system.

The BAMS equipment offers close-range microphones, a mechanism for wireless recharging and an electronic stethoscope. This device can offer a wide range of medical data including; heart rate variability and activity, lung noises and even data on interactions between heartbeats and respiration.

Physical activity and sleep are just two examples of events that the BAMS device can monitor.

With a comprehensive range of functionalities, the BAMS system could aid medical decisions, raise the standards of healthcare, and ultimately  revolutionize ongoing patient monitoring.
