Wyeth Pharmaceuticals reveals TMRC launch

5th April 2006

The Health Ministry of Scotland has teamed up with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to create a Translational Medicine Research Collaboration (TMRC), announced in Edinburgh this week.

Comprised of four centres ? major medical universities in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow ? and the NHS, Scottish Enterprise and Wyeth, the move should lead to improved clinical testing of new therapies.

Translational medicine combines investigation into the elements of a disease with the use of novel therapies and treatments.

“Translational medicine provides a major opportunity to reduce the bottlenecks in the development of new drug treatments, resulting in significant benefits in economic development and health,” Jack Perry, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise, said at the launch.

The university centres will act as centre of excellences for the new development and Wyeth itself has contributed $86 million toward the initiative.

Wyeth has said that translational medicine is a “key success factor” for next generation medicines.
