Siemens Medical launches “revolutionary” hearing technology

Siemens Medical has announced it has launched a “revolutionary” new technology for patients with impaired hearing. It says that the Centra is the first ever hearing aid with the technology to adjust a user’s preferences to different environments using the company’s DataLearning technology.

The technology works by recording data about different environments and applying the data “to improve the hearing experience”, so over time the Centra continually improve hearing as it “learns”. It includes wireless ear-to-ear technology which synchronises each device so it is easier to ascertain where certain sounds are coming from.

SoundSmoothing technology, which enhances speech sounds while filtering background noises to help provide a better listening environment, is also included.

Rob Ryman, audiologist and hearing therapist at Siemens, said: “Centra offers the most advanced hearing technology available, which enables users to feel comfortable and confident in any situation, improving their hearing and quality of life.”

“With more automated features than any other hearing system, Centra is designed to provide wearers with the highest level of performance in any environment with little or no intervention required – it sets an exciting new standard,” he added.

RNID, the UK’s largest body representing deaf people, estimates that there are 8,945,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK and that two million people have hearing aids, of which 1.4 million use them regularly. The organisation says that a further four million people could benefit from using one.
