LEO’s psoriasis ointment ‘more effective’ than biological treatments

Clinical trials have revealed that an ointment produced by LEO Pharma can be more effective when treating severe psoriasis cases than other National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) approved alternatives.

The study, which is published in the International Journal of Dermatology, states that a routinely prescribed ointment, made from calcipotriol and bethmethasone dipropionate, performs better than biological therapies monoclonal antibody therapies.

Commenting on the study, Peter Lapsley, chief executive of the NHS’s skin care compaign, said: “Because people’s skins are different and respond differently to different treatments, it is essential that the widest range of treatments for skin diseases such as psoriasis should be available on prescription at appropriate levels within the NHS.”

The research itself involved 2,452 patients and its results show that 88 per cent of patients with severe psoriasis treated with the two-compound treatment improved by 50 per cent over four weeks of treatment.
