Abbott launches embolic protection device in EU
Abbott has announced the launch of its “next-generation” embolic protection device throughout Europe.
Following CE mark approval, the Emboshield PRO Embolic Protection System will now be available to physicians across Europe for use during carotid artery stenting procedures.
It is designed to capture and remove pieces of artherosclerotic plaque from arteries, which can lead to strokes and other problems. The new device is shorter than its predecessor and also more radiopaque, meaning it is more transparent during x-ray angiography.
In addition, it uses guidewire technology to ensure the device remains stable during device exchanges in carotid artery procedures.
Chap Hance, president of vascular solutions at Abbott Vascular, commented: “The Emboshield PRO is further evidence of Abbott’s leadership in developing improved treatments to help reduce the risk of stroke – the third leading cause of death and the most common cause of adult disability in Europe.”
Dr Alberto Cremonesi, director of the interventional cario-angiology unit at the Villa Maria Cecila Hospital in Cotignola, Italy, added that the new device represents a “significant development” in embolic protection treatment and an “important new option” in fixing tortuous vessels.
Abbott Vascular also markets a variety carotid stents, as well as sponsoring several stent clinical trials.
