Ark Therapeutics launches MRSA wound gel in UK

Ark Therapeutics has announced that it is to launch a new topical anti-microbial wound gel in the UK.

The gel, called Flaminal, is to be released on October 1st and will be sold to hospitals and community nurses for the treatment of diabetic and venous leg ulcers. Manufacturers say the gel will be used for wounds that show delayed healing as a result of local infection or high bacterial load.

Flaminal, when released, will be made available in two formulations for wet wounds and those that are drier. It adds that Flaminal will be an alternative to silver-based treatments currently on the market.

Paul Higham, Arks’ commercial director, comments that the gel “is particularly effective in preventing acquired wound infection and therefore promoting wound healing”.

He added: “Its launch is another development in our long-term strategy of building a stand-alone wound care business in the UK, which we will continue to strengthen through further in-licensing and the development of our own products.”

Flaminal works by keeping wounds in humid environments, debriding them and restoring bacterial balance. The gel can be used for highly excluding ulcers, oncologic wounds, bed sores and second-degree wounds.

Recent phase II studies of Ark Therapeutic’ HIV Lipodystrophy trial showed it displayed “improvements” in metabolic risk factors.

The company said that test scores for total body fat measurements showed no deterioration in HIV patients using EG005.
