MSD sells UK manufacturing plant to Aesica

Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) has sold its Ponders End manufacturing facility to Aesica, a UK-based manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Aesica, a former division of BASF, claims the Enfield-based plant has “potent compound and bulk manufacturing facilities” that will help the company increase its production capacity and capability.

Additionally, Aesica will supply active ingredients and intermediates to MSD over the course of a number of years, with a potential revenue stream of between $150 million (80 million pounds) and $300 million.

Dr Robert Hardy, Aesica’s chief executive officer, said his firm is “delighted” to have acquired the Ponders End factory.

“We are an ambitious company and buying Ponders End is an important part of our strategy to build on our leading position in the supply of active pharmaceutical ingredients through the acquisition of products and facilities, and through growing our custom synthesis business,” he remarked.

Mike Lewis, head of MSD’s Ponders End plant, said the move benefits the strategic ambitions of both companies, while securing the future of the 74 staff employed at the site, who will become Aesica employees with immediate effect.

Aesica is based in Cramlington, Northumberland and claims to be the “partner of choice” to global pharmaceutical companies.

The company came into being following a management buyout from BASF in 2004.
