Schering AG in new supply agreement

24th October 2006

Schering AG has signed a new supply agreement for Nebido, which it hopes will extend sales of the product.

The definitive supply agreement provides Indevus Pharmaceuticals with the rights to the drug, which has recently been approved and launched in Europe. Nebido is used for the treatment of male hypogonadism, which Indevus states is an “increasingly recognised medical condition” and is characterised by the inability of the testicles to produce testosterone.

Manufacturers state the drug is the first long-acting injectable treatment for hypogonadism and that it requires a single dose every three months, which can fit in with “the physician-recommended follow-up of every three months” hence making it a convenient treatment for patients.

Glenn Cooper, CEO and chairman of Indevus, told Pharmaceutical Business Review: “The finalisation of the supply agreement is an important step in bringing Nebido to the market in the US.”

Nebido was launched in Finland first before reaching UK, French and German shores soon after its approval in Europe. The drug has been well-received due to its method of treatment, which significantly reduces the number of injections required.

Testosterone deficiency often occurs due to congenital disorders that affect hormonal feedback regulation between the brain and the testicles. It can also be caused by lower gonadal function as a result of aging.
