AstraZeneca to launch own generic version of heart drug

AstraZeneca has signed a distribution agreement for an authorised generic form of its own Toprol-XL (metoprolol succinate) heart drug. The company announced the agreement with Par Pharmaceutical following reports that Eon Labs, a subsidiary of Novartis had launched its own generic form of the compound.

Toprol-XL is a beta1-selective adrenoceptor-blocking agent, designed for oral delivery and available as an extended release tablet for once-daily administration for a regular and managed release of metoprolol.

The drug is indicated for the treatment of patients with hupertension, angina pectoris and ischemic, hypertensive or cardiomyopathic based heart failure.
“Currently the authorised generic product will be distributed in the 25 mg dosage strength,” AstraZeneca reported.

“The signing of this agreement does not affect the availability of AstraZeneca’s branded version of metoprolol succinate, Toprol-XL.”

AstraZeneca reported that its previous EPS guidance announced concurrently with its financial results for the third quarter of 2006 had not taking into account the launch of any generic forms of its Toprol-XL drug.

Following the announcement by Eon Labs regarding the launch of its generic treatment, AstraZeneca have stated that it estimates its guidance to at the lower end of the $3.85-$3.95 (1.99-2.05 pounds) scale it previously reported.
