Solvay launches MRSA disinfectant

Solvay has announced the launch of a novel biocidal, Perestane, used as a disinfectant against hospital ‘superbugs’ Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile.

Research from a British laboratory endorsed by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service and the Hospital Infection Research Laboratory in City Hospital Birmingham confirmed the efficacy of the compound against MRSA and Clostridium difficile.

Solvay reports that Perestane is a biodegradable compound that is non bio-accumulating, non skin-sensitizing, non-toxic and non-persistent. The compound has also been notified by the European Union under its biocidal products directive.

Eric Mignonat, general manager for peroxide business at Solvay, said: “With Perestane, Sovlay has developed an innovative, highly efficient, user-and-environment-friendly disinfectant that can be implemented in various demanding applications.”

He added that, through its research and knowledge, the company provided a solution to the life-threatening problem of hospital ‘superbugs’ and could assist in the task of making hospitals safer.

Last month, Solvay Pharmaceuticals renewed its clinical development strategic partnership with Quintiles that was originally formed in 2001 for a further five years. The company reported that is extension signalled the previous success of the collaboration in improving efficiency and speeding up the progress of Solvay’s product portfolio.
