Novartis reports new evidence for diabetes treatment

Novartis has announced new data showing support for the efficacy and tolerability of Galvus (vildagliptin). Combined analyses from a number of phase III trials has shown “significant” improvements in blood glucose control in patients with type two diabetes aged 65 and older.

Information from the studies showed an overall reduction in blood sugar of one per cent A1C, rising up to 1.8 per cent in patients that had the highest baseline levels.

Additionally, data presented at the 19th World Diabetes Congress in South Africa showed improved overall islet cell function, reducing the cells’ role in the development of type two diabetes.

James Shannon, global head of development at Novartis Pharma, noted that the clinical profile of the compound had been “well established” by the companies vigorous system of clinical studies.

“We have demonstrated that Galvus can be an effective treatment for a broad range of patients with type two diabetes, including those who have unique treatment challenges and needs,” he said.

He added that monotherapy with Galvus does not result in overall weight gain and other adverse affects related to the use of other treatments.

In November, Novartis launched the Galiant clinical trial to compare Galvus with thiazolidinediones to test its efficacy in enhancing blood sugar control.
