Pfizer licences motilin from Kosan

Pfizer is to license the motilin agonist programme from Kosan Biosciences, including the clinical candidate KOS-2187 and related compounds. In preclinical studies, this compound has shown potential for improved gastric emptying, with potential benefits for patients with gastrointestinal diseases, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and diabetic gasatroparesis.

According to the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the start of a phase I clinical study of KOS-2187, with both companies working together to file the necessary regulatory documents.

Pfizer will pay Kosan an initial sum of $12.5 million (6.39 million pounds), with a further $250 million payable for development milestones and royalty payments. Pfizer will take responsibility for aspects of the motilin agonist programme, including development, regulatory activities and commercialisation.

James Bristol, senior vice president of world wide discovery research at Pfizer, said;” Pfizer believes that the mechanism of action of KOS-2187 and its demonstrated activity as a prokinetic agent are significant indications of its potential as a new approach for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.”

He added that the compound was a worthy addition to the company’s gastrointestinal pharmaceutical product portfolio.

Last month, Pfizer announced that it had discontinued its collaboration with Organon for the development of bipolar I disorder treatment asenapine for commercial reasons.
