DoH urges protection from cold

15th January 2007

Following the advent of St Hilary’s day last week, the coldest day of the year according to century-old folklore, the Department of Health (DoH) has urged those most at risk from the cold weather to be protect themselves against the weather.

Energy retailers in Britain have funded the DoH and Home Heat Helpline, with the department noting that 20,000 people die annually in England and Wales as a result of the cold.

Advice included stopping smoking to increase blood oxygen levels and reduce the risk of heart attacks, eating a healthy and balanced diet and wearing more than one layer including a hat.

Caroline Flint, minister of state for public health, commented that it is “vital” that people look after themselves and one another during the winter.

“I’m pleased to say that the DoH and the Energy Retail Association are joining forces to make information about winter warmth accessible to all who need it,” she said.

Last week the DoH announced that employees who work in close contact with poultry would be offered free seasonal flu vaccinations to prevent against the slight risk of contracting avian and seasonal flu simultaneously, which could have potential pandemic implications.
