Astellas announces CD40 antagonistic mAb partnership

Astellas Pharma has announced that it has signed a license and research and development agreement with Kirin Brewery for the development and marketing of human anti-CD40 antagonistic monoclonal antibody (mAb).

CD40 antagonistic mAb was discovered by Kirin and has exhibited significant immunosuppressive capabilities in preclinical trials. The antibody is thought to inhibit transduction of signals between T0Cell and antigen-presenting cell, affecting immune response.

It is forecast that the compound will be used to prevent the rejection of organs following transplants, in addition to treatment for autoimmune diseases.

Under the terms of the agreement, Astellas will pay Kirin an initial licensing payment in addition to milestone payments upon the attainment of certain landmarks, while research and development will be conducted by both companies with equal cost-sharing.

“On a worldwide basis, Astellas has a right to sell the product and Kirin has a right to co-promote,” the companies state.

Kirin uses its TC Mouse technology platform for the creation and development of CD antagonistic mAb and other fully human-antibody therapeutics, with immunological diseases being one of the company’s main targets.

Earlier this week, Astellas announced that its US subsidiary received an action letter from the Food and Drug Administration for the new drug application relating to its FK506 modified release once-daily immunosuppressant.
