Procter and Gamble mark 15th anniversary of Asacol

Procter & Gamble has this week announced the 15th anniversary of the launch of Asacol (mesalamine), a 5-ASA therapy for a form of inflammatory bowel disease named ulcerative colitis (UC).

Asacol is the most-prescribed 5-ASA therapy and is indicated for the treatment of mildly to moderately active UC and for maintaining remission of UC in patients.

The company reports that it provides a number of grants in support of vital patient groups and professional organisations involved in addressing issues relating to UC, including the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association and others.

Additionally, Procter & Gamble initiates support programmes and education to help patients improve their understanding of the condition and medication, such as the ScriptAssist Nurse Call Back programme and the Insights & Answers newsletter.

Mark A Collar, president of global pharmaceuticals and health at the firm, said: “Over the past 15 years, we have worked hard to earn the trust of ulcerative colitis patients and their physicians.

“Asacol has improved many lives on the basis of its effectiveness and tolerability, enabling it to become the category leader.”

He added that the company would continue to engage in clinical studies and patient education in order to improve understanding of the condition and the quality of life of patients.

Earlier this week, Procter & Gamble reported an increase in net sales of eight per cent to $19.73 billion (10.04 billion pounds) for the quarter from October to December 2006.
