Pfizer announces results of Lipitor trial analysis

Pfizer has announced the results of new analysis of the five-year treating to new targets (TNT) study of Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) published this week in Circulation. The trial investigated the use of 80 mg tablets of Lipitor in patients with coronary heart disease.

The analysis by Pfizer showed that patients with heart disease administered with Lipitor achieved a 26 per cent reduction in the risk of hospitalisation, while patients with a history of heart failure had this risk reduced by 41 per cent.

Involving over 10,000 subjects with coronary heart disease in 14 countries worldwide, the TNT study was the largest investigation of the safety and efficacy of Lipitor in 80mg doses to date.

Dr Rochelle Chaiken, vice president of the CV metabolic group at Pfizer, said: “These results show that patients with a history of heart failure who were treated with Lipitor 80 mg dose significantly reduced their chances of hospitalisations for heart failure.”

She added that this data contributed to existing information regarding the efficacy of Lipitor in the reduction of cardiovascular events, such as strokes, heart attacks and revascularisation procedures.

In November 2006, Pfizer announced the results of new analysis showing a one third reduction in heart attacks and strokes in patients with chronic kidney disease administered with Lipitor.
