Boston Scientific launches pain-management campaign

1st March 2007

Boston Scientific has announced the launch of a pain-management campaign from its neuromodulation group, with the aims of educating those suffering from chronic pain of the importance of pain-specialists and providing support to patients through its Race Against Pain website.

The company will use the internet, media, special events, patient outreach programmes and industry conferences as part of its plan to raise awareness of pain management for chronic sufferers.

Michael Onuscheck, president of pain management at Boston Scientific, said: “While all physicians treat pain, few specialise in pain management.

“The Race Against Pain campaign will help raise awareness for the under-recognised medical discipline of pain management and help guide chronic pain sufferers to possible solutions.”

He added that the financial cost each year to society of chronic pain was in excess of $100 billion (50.97 billion pounds), with the condition being a leading cause of disability.

Boston Scientific reports that the campaign has been inspired and is presented by racecar driver Mike Roman who has suffered with chronic phantom limb pain following amputation of his right leg as a result of an infection.

Last November, the company announced that it has received the CE mark for its Artisan 2×8 surgical lead designed for use with the Precision spinal cord stimulation system for the treatment of chronic pain.
