AstraZeneca announces partner’s publication of AG1-1067 results

AstraZeneca has announced that its partner, AtheroGenerics has published the initial results of its aggressive reduction of inflammation stops events (Arise) phase III clinical trial assessing the investigational compound AGI-1067.

The drug, which was tested in patients suffering with coronary artery disease, did not meet its composite primary endpoint of the time to first incidence of a major adverse cardiovascular event, including cardiovascular death, resuscitated cardiac arrest, stroke, heart attack and the need for admission to hospital for unstable angina or coronary revascularisation.

AtheroGenerics reports that the compound did meet a number of other clinical endpoints, including reducing the chance of cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke and improving blood sugar control and other diabetes parameters.

The Arise trial involved over 6,100 patients suffering recent acute coronary syndrome and was conducted in the US, UK, Canada and South Africa.

“After completion of the final analysis, under the terms of the license and collaboration agreement AstraZeneca has a 45-day period in which to decide whether or not to continue with the collaboration,” the company reports.

The companies will now collaborate in a full assessment of the data from the Arise trial, while AtheroGenerics has expressed its commitment to further develop AGI-1067.
