Chiesi has announced the initiation of the myocardial iron overload in thalassaemia (MIOT) project to assess cardiac iron accumulation and myocardial fibrosis through a new technique.
Aiming to enhance the life expectancy of patients with the genetic condition of thalassaemia major, also known as Mediterranean anaemia, the Ti-Two-Star method used in the trial aids early diagnosis of cardiac iron accumulation undetectable through standard tests.
The MIOT project is a result of the partnership of a number of public bodies and private enterprises, including Chiesi, Schering and GE Healthcare.
Dr Massimo Lombardi, coordinator of the trial, said: “To determine the cardiac iron accumulation is a decisive element.
“To follow accurately a crucial problem for thalassaemic patients’ survival and to decide accordingly the best therapy on an individual basis.”
Professor Aurelio Maggio, director of the operating unit of haematology II with thalassaemia at AO V Cervello, commented that the project would be of great help to patients, while also showing whether reduced iron accumulation results in clinical benefits as suspected.
Earlier this month, Chiesi announced that it had received the 2006 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award for the respiratory diseases market in Europe as recognition for its Modulite technology platform, strategic partnerships, research and development efforts and product roadmaps.
