Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals officially launches

Bayer has announced the launch of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals in the US, with the new firm incorporating Berlex into the company. This move follows the acquisition of Schering AG, of which Berlex was formerly a subsidiary.

Headquartered in New Jersey, the pharmaceutical unit will employ 5,500 people in the US, bringing 300 jobs to the state.

The division will be dedicated to the development, manufacturing and commercialisation of products to advance human health, with research groups dedicated to diagnostic imaging, haematology, cardiology, specialised therapeutics and women’s healthcare.

Products developed by the firm for the US market include treatments for kidney cancer, multiple sclerosis, haemophilia and other conditions.

Dr Gunnar Riemann, a member of the board of management of the company, said: “Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals combines the strength of two of the most recognised and well-respected pharmaceutical companies in the industry, creating an integrated speciality pharmaceuticals business that will drive innovation and growth globally.”

He added that the he was confident the new firm would continue to advance understanding of medical issues and improve the lives of people worldwide.

Bayer recently announced improvements to the online version of its annual report, noting the addition of a number of analytical tools for readers.
