Oxoid extends lab preparations to include Tryptone X

Oxoid has announced its decision to further its range of laboratory preparations to include Tryptone X.

The substance, which is produced using a process enabling the natural release of vitamins into the product, is a pancreatic digest of casein, which Oxoid asserts fosters better growth rates in a range of micro-organisms.

Among the benefits of the new preparation is its potential to be used as a detector for the canning and sterility-testing industries of "flat sour" or "sulphide" spoilage organisms.

This is as a result of the Tryptone X’s high Tryptophan content, which makes it ideal for use in the indole reaction, the company asserts.

While traditional Tryptone is an "excellent source of amino nitrogen… often used as a constituent in microbial culture media", Oxoid claims that Tryptone X outperforms its predecessor in facilitating the growth of E coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes and Lactobacillus brevis among others.

At the end of March Oxoid announced the launch of a range of antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing products at European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2007.
