Baxter announces ‘green’ headquarters

Baxter has reported the purchase of Green-e certified renewable energy certificates and announced that corporations have a vital role to play in meeting the global challenge of tackling climate change, in addition to their obligation to widening access to healthcare worldwide.

These certificates – to the value of 15.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity – equate to the amount of power used each year by the firm at its headquarters in Deerfield, Illinois

Purchased from NewEnergy, the acquisition of these documents represents an investment in renewable wind energy supplied to the electric grid in the US, though the company does not directly use this renewable power.

Robert L Parkinson, chairman and chief executive officer of the firm, said: “Our position as a healthcare company has as strong connection to our responsibility to help protect the environment.”

He added that the firm had taken many-sided approach to dealing with its contribution to climate change, with the primary means of tackling the issue being the conservation of energy by the firm by implementing a number of initiatives at its facilities to reduce energy use.

Last month, Baxter announced that had investment $35 million (18 million pounds) aimed at widening the access to healthcare in developing nations worldwide.
