3M appoints new executive

US medical products manufacturer 3M has announced the appointment of a new senior vice-president of legal affairs.

Marschall Smith will take over the position from July 16th, serving as general counsel of the firm. Mr Smith currently works as vice-president, general counsel and secretary of the manufacturing company Brunswick Corporation.

Announcing the decision, George Buckley, chairman, president and chief executive of 3M, expressed delight in Mr Smith’s acceptance of what he sees as an “important” role.

“His experience in many types of businesses makes him an ideal match for the tremendous product and technology diversity of 3M,” Mr Buckley commented.

“I know he will make great contributions in helping us drive our growth agenda forward,” he added.

Mr Smith, 62, has been at Brunswick in his aforesaid role since 2001, before which time he was executive vice-president of corporate development and general counsel of technology firm Digitas. He has also worked for IMC Global, American Medical International and Baxter International.

Last week, 3M participated in a New York investor conference, having taken part the second annual JPMorgan Basics and Industrials Conference on June 12th.
