Johnson and Johnson reports on fractured spine product technology

Johnson & Johnson has announced that its Polyax technology, which is used to treat fractured spines, has been effective in studies of the treatment of leg fractures.

The product, marketed by Johnson & Johnson company DePuy Orthopaedics, uses polaxial screw technology to lock plates and according to research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, is an effective option for difficult-to-treat fractures around the knee.

Researchers concluded that Polyax can be used successfully in simple and complex periarticular fractures.

“This study enforces out long-held confidence in the strength of this type of locking plate coupled with polyaxial locking screws,” said George Haidukewych, lead author of the study.

The screws of the locked plating system can be positioned at customised angles so that they are best suited to an individual patient’s anatomy. They were originally developed for the treatment of spinal fractures.

Dr Haidukewych added: “The distinct advantage of polaxial screws is their versatility. The ability to use the contour of the plate and to angle the multi-directional screws is a huge benefit to surgeons who want to avoid prosthesis.”

DePuy also recently announced the launch of a new product which aims to restore hip mobility in patients who require total hip replacement.
