Lib Dems launch NHS SOS website

The Liberal Democrats have announced the launch of a new website, NHS SOS, outlining the party’s plans for improving the health service as apart of a “major summer campaign” on the NHS.

Included on the site is the the Liberal Democrats three-step plan to make the health service better, which is to firstly stop cuts to resources, secondly to reduce waste and thirdly to “give us back our NHS” – an increase in the input of local people into local healthcare services.

This move follows the appointment of Gordon Brown as prime minister and Alan Johnson as new health secretary.

Menzies Campbell, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “I know from my own experience just how important the NHS is and how hard nurses, doctors and other staff work.”

He added that attempts by the Labour government to control all aspects of the health services have resulted in a waste of resources and consequent cuts in government spending on the NHS.

Last week, the Liberal Democrats cited a poll published in Doctor Magazine as evidence of a loss in trust between the government and NHS staff.

The survey in the publication claimed that over three-quarters of consultants and GPs believe that planned reforms to the health service from the government will adversely effect and “kill off” the NHS.
