Invitrogen releases AlgiMatrix culture system

Invitrogen has launched AlgiMatrix, its three-dimensional system for mimicking the conditions of a cell in the human body.

The macroporous alginate sponge structure allows for more consistent results to be obtained, according to the developer.

Superior cell loading, nutrient delivery and cell-to-cell interaction are all cited by the manufacturer as being potential benefits of the new product.

Nicolas Barthelemy, senior vice-president of cell culture systems at Invitrogen, said: "AlgiMatrix meets the growing demand in cell culture to replace two-dimensional culture dishes with three-dimensional scaffolds.

"This scaffolding better mirrors the environment experienced by normal cells in the body and enables inter-cellular interactions with more realistic biology."

He added that cell biology requires that samples be characterised and continuously monitored during experiments, as well as simply being kept alive.

The launch preceded the announcement of Invitrogen’s investor day, scheduled for Thursday, August 16th and to be held at its molecular probes facility in Eugene, Oregon.
