BioMerieux launches automated C difficile test

BioMerieux has launched the first automated test for Clostridium difficile (C difficile) A and B toxins, the company claims.

The test is based on the Vidas system, capable of running analyses at a rate of up to 50 per hour.

Clinicians testing for C difficile may obtain results in 75 minutes, compared with a delay of 24 to 48 hours for conventional procedures, according to the manufacturer.

Stephane Bancel, chief executive officer of bioMerieux, states: "The introduction of this automated test … offers a new solution to detect, prevent and better control hospital-acquired infections.

"These are a major worry for any health professional and any hospitalised patient and are part of the key pathologies identified in our strategic plan."

Latest figures from the Health Protection Agency show there was a 22 per cent rise in cases of C difficile in UK hospitals over the first quarter of 2007.
