Shire drug ‘provides effective ADHD control’

Shire has announced that its recently launched treatment for the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) has been proven in clinical trials to provide effective and consistent control of the condition.

According to parent reports taken at 10am, 2pm and 6pm, the drug has been shown to provide symptom management throughout the day, while surveys show that 60 per cent of other medications can stop working before 6pm, with 40 per cent ceasing action before 4pm.

Vyvanse is reported to operate in conjunction with the body’s metabolism in order to enhance treatment of principal symptoms of ADHD, including those related to inattention and behaviour.

Frank A Lopez, of the Children’s Developmental Centre in Winter Park, said: “Vyvanse was shown in clinical studies to provide physicians with a treatment option for ADHD that offers consistent and effective control of ADHD symptoms throughout the day for up to 12 hours, from morning through homework and family time.”

He added that this day-long control of symptoms is vital, as children have the need for concentration during after-school activities and homework similar to that required during formal schooling.

In May 2007, Shire presented scientific data relating to its ADHD product portfolio to the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association held in San Diego.
