Wyeth picks up WSJ accolade

Wyeth has announced that it has been ranked as the top pharmaceutical firm in the field of patent-based intellectual property in the Patent Scorecard listings from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) last week.

The scorecard assessed firms in a number of categories relating to patents, including the number of patents granted to a firm, the quality of these patents, the extent to which patents are connected to core science, the level of basic research and the speed of the research process.

Wyeth was considered the best firm out of the 35 global companies measured, with a sciences strength rating of 9801.08, with the nearest competitor in this area receiving a score of 7334.

Robert R Ruffolo Jr, senior vice-president of the firm and president of research and development, said: “Wyeth has made considerable effort to increase its scientific strength via ongoing investment in our people, technology and resources.”

He added that the company has a target of delivering two new pharmaceutical products to physicians and patients every year.

Last month, scientists at Wyeth were recognised with the National Medal of Technology for their efforts on the discovery, development and manufacture of Prevnar (pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine [diphtheria CRM197 protein]).
