Wyeth scientists recognised by ACS

Four researchers from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ chemical and screening sciences group have been recognised with awards from the American Chemical Society (ACS) at its 234th national meeting and exposition held in Boston this week.

Principal research scientist Andrew Fensome received the David W Robertson award for excellence in medical chemistry as a result of his work with nonsteriodal orally-administered contraceptive agents.

Edmund I Graziani, also a principal research scientist, received the Young Industrial Investigators Award for his work in organic chemistry.

Senior research scientists Biqi Wu and Kevin Curran both received a Technical Acehivement in Organic Chemistry Award for their work in the field.

Magid Abou-Gharbia, senior vice-president of chemical and screening sciences at Wyeth Research, said: “The recognition of these four scientists reflects the high quality of work being done throughout Wyeth Research, particularly in our chemistry group.”

He added that medical chemistry is a vital constituent part of the firm’s research and development work and has resulted in the delivery of a number of key drug candidates.

Earlier this month, it was reported that – together with GlaxoSmithKline, Schering-Plough, Johnson & Johnson and Bristol-Myers Squibb – Wyeth was a partner in the RxeSearch Summer Institute collaboration between academia and the pharmaceutical industry.
