Boston Scientific highlights Taxus Liberte Stent safety

Boston Scientific has announced the results of the European and Intercontinental launch phases of its Taxus Olympia registry.

According to the one-year results involving the first 7,124 patients of the 23,000 enrolled in complex and real-world environments gave positive safety data for the Taxus Liberte coronary stent system.

According to the data, cardiac events related to the sent system were low overall, measured at 3.9 per cent, with a 1.1 per cent rate of cardiac death, 0.9 per cent myocardial infarction and stent-related re-intervention of target vessels at 2.5 per cent.

Jeff Goodman, president of Boston Scientific, said: “The one-year Olympia data show excellent outcomes with the Taxus Liberte stent system across a large patient population with a broad range of lesion complexity, including diabetics who have typically demonstrated increased event rates.”

He added that the Taxus Liberte stent offers clinicians excellent deliverability, while the product is the sole stent on the market with specifically-designed geometry for drug elution.

Consequently, the company reports that physician preference and robust performance in diabetic patients has led to the next-generation drug-eluting coronary stent system to take a clear lead in European and Intercontinental stent markets.

In July 2007, Boston Scientific announced the first implantation of its third-generation Taxus Element paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent.
