Bristol Myers Squibb and sanofi aventis registry publishes analysis

More timely, more aggressive therapy is needed to address the condition of individuals with leg artery blockages, it has been claimed.

A new analysis presented by the sanofi-aventis and Bristol Myers Squibb-sponsored Reach Registry emphasises the fact that those with peripheral arterial disease suffer high rates of hospitalisation, stroke, heart attack and death.

Research has been presented to the European Society of Cardiology Congress, further supporting the first-year results of the registry published in March in the Journal of the American Medial association,

The study described the level of major cardiovascular disease or death exhibited by outpatients with atherothrombosis as “surprisingly high”.

Dr. Alan T Hirsch, professor of epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, remarks: “The Reach Registry continues to demonstrate the real-world burden of atherothrombotic disease worldwide.

“In the case of PAD, further analysis has re-emphasized the need for doctors to adhere to evidence-based guidelines for treatment like long-term antiplatelet therapy with aspirin or clopidogrel.”

Last week, Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer announced an agreement to collaborate on a metabolic disorders programme.
